Hi guys!

In this week’s Substack, I really want to talk about how to clean your makeup brushes.

For some of you who are new to this platform and don't know much about me, I’ve been working as a professional makeup artist in Hollywood for over two decades. I also have my own makeup brand, Monika Blunder Beauty, which I launched about 4 years ago.

As a makeup artist, it’s crucial to show up with clean brushes. Nothing makes me cringe more than seeing a messy makeup station with filthy brushes. But I know many of you aren’t professional makeup artists and may just use your brushes on yourself. Even so, it’s still incredibly important to take the time to wash them. So how often should you clean them? I recommend once a week as a great start.

How to Wash and Take Care of Your Makeup Brushes

Taking care of your makeup brushes is essential not only for the longevity of the tools but also for the health of your skin. Dirty brushes can harbor bacteria, oils, and product buildup, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

Why You Should Wash Your Brushes Regularly

It’s easy to forget about your brushes, but regular cleaning is really key. Here’s why:

  1. Prevent Bacteria Build-Up: Brushes collect oils, dirt, and bacteria from your skin, which can transfer back to your face and cause acne or other skin issues.

  2. Better Makeup Application: Clean brushes help your makeup go on smoothly and evenly, giving you that flawless finish.

  3. Extend Brush Lifespan: When you care for your brushes, you’re also extending their life by preventing the bristles from becoming brittle or losing shape.
