Happy Friday, everyone!
As I was reflecting on my next Substack, I realized that I’d love to share more about makeup here on this platform. Last week, we dove into the importance of cleaning your makeup brushes, and this week, I want to talk about something that’s coming up soon —wedding makeup. With wedding season right around the corner, it seems like the perfect time to discuss how to get your makeup looking flawless for such a special occasion!
Three of the most memorable days of my life were my wedding day and the days my children, Valentina and Gabriel, were born.
Speaking of my wedding, it was truly the most magical day. I got married 22 years ago in Austria—my home country—at my favorite hotel, Stanglwirt. If you get a chance, check out their website. It’s pure magic, and the view is straight out of The Sound of Music. Truly the most special place!
Okay, let’s get into wedding makeup.
Since your wedding day is likely the most important day of your life, you’ll want to look and feel your best. I’m here to share some insights from my experiences as a makeup artist working with brides and bridal parties over the years. Wedding makeup isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling radiant and confident as you walk down the aisle. The right makeup can make a huge difference in how a bride feels on her special day.
Also, inspiration photos are a huge help! For me, my mom and Caroline Bessette-Kennedy were my ultimate icons. I wanted to look just like these women on my wedding day. Finding a look you love, whether it’s a celebrity or something else, can help pull everything together—your dress, makeup, and hair.
1. Preparing Your Skin
Before we even start talking makeup, let’s talk about skincare. I always advise brides to avoid trying new treatments right before the big day—no facials or new products in the month leading up to it. Some facials can cause skin irritation, which could lead to breakouts. To ensure your skin absorbs products properly, use an exfoliating scrub the day before the wedding.
On the wedding day, spend a good amount of time on your skin prep. I love usingYSE Beauty exfoliating pads to create a clean canvas, followed by a nourishing serum and a good moisturizer. If your wedding is outdoors, don’t forget SPF! Just be sure it’s the right kind—one that won’t cause flashback or pilling. SUPERGOOP sunscreen is my favorite and I use it on all my clients.
2. Creating a Timeless Look
When I look back at my wedding photos, 22 years later, I still love my makeup. That’s why I always tell brides to go for something timeless. You want your makeup to stand the test of time. Think glowing skin, subtle eyeshadow, and a neutral lip. While trends are fun, your wedding photos will be around for decades, so choose a look that enhances your natural beauty. Soft, matte finishes and neutral tones never go out of style.
3. Long-Lasting Makeup
Your wedding day is going to be long, and your makeup needs to last through all the emotions, hugs, and dancing! I always set the makeup with a good setting spray to lock everything in place. A loose powder helps minimize shine, and a touch-up kit with lipstick, lip liner, and loose powder is a must (I recommend buying a mini powder at Sephora).
Oh, and don’t forget to wear your favorite perfume! I always recommend wearing your future husband's favorite scent, the one that reminds him of you.
4. Bridal Party Makeup
The makeup for the bridal party is just as important as the bride’s. The goal is to complement the bride’s look while helping each member feel her best. I like to use similar tones for the bridal party to keep things cohesive but tailor the makeup to each person’s features. Everyone should feel comfortable and confident in their look.
5. Favorite Products for Wedding Makeup
Here are my go-to products for achieving flawless wedding makeup:
Foundation:
My all-time favorite foundation is the Haus Labs Foundation. It’s a staple in my pro makeup kit, and I’ve used it countless times on celebrity clients for red carpet events and major occasions. The coverage is medium, and the finish is so natural—it's perfect for weddings. Highly recommend!
Concealer:
For concealer, obviously Blunder Cover. It’s the perfect formula for all skin types and ages. The finish is incredibly skin-like, and it won't settle into fine lines, which is key for keeping that fresh, flawless look all day.
Blush:
Blush is such an important step in bridal makeup. You want to create that perfect flush for a natural, glowing look on your special day. A little goes a long way for a fresh, radiant finish!
Highlighter:
For the perfect highlight, I’m obsessed with the Dior Forever Glow Liquid Highlighter. It gives just the right amount of glow without being too shimmery. I love using it on the cheeks for a subtle radiance, but I also apply it on the eyelids for a touch of sparkle. You can even mix it into your foundation for an all-over glow.
Lip Liner:
Lip liner is essential to define the lips, prevent lipstick from bleeding, and create the illusion of fuller lips. A must-have for a polished bridal look.
Lipstick:
For a “your lips but better” look, I love the shade Anna-Maria. The formula is so important here—opt for a satin finish that offers hydration without feeling too drying on your lips. You’ll want something that lasts without compromising comfort.
Lip Oil/Gloss:
MB Beauty has a lip oil in the shade feige that is perfect for a wedding pout. It gives a gorgeous, glossy finish without being sticky or overly shiny. It’s all about a hint of sheen and hydration—just the right amount for a naturally beautiful, kissable look.
Loose Powder:
The right powder is essential for a flawless finish. I love Huda Beauty’s Easy Bake Powder in Sugar Cookie. It’s perfect for blurring imperfections, minimizing pores, and giving you an airbrushed effect without looking too powdery. You want a smooth, matte finish that still feels lightweight.
Body Glow:
Don’t forget about your body—this is where you can really elevate your bridal look! A subtle body glow will give you a radiant, all-over glow that complements your makeup and makes your skin look amazing in photos.
Setting Spray:
For a wedding day that lasts, setting spray is a must. While there are many great options out there, I recommend Patrick Starrr’s 16-Hour Waterproof Matte Finish Spray. It’s my top pick for ensuring your makeup stays put all day, no matter what.
Your wedding day is one of the most memorable moments of your life, and your makeup should make you feel like the best version of yourself. Whether you're the bride or part of the bridal party, the right makeup will enhance your natural beauty and make you glow on your big day.
